Abner & Cynthia Oakes Selected as Grand Marshals
of Hamden's 2010 Memorial Day Parade
Mayor Scott Jackson announced that Mr. And Mrs. Abner Oakes have been selected as Grand Marshals of Hamden's 74th annual Memorial Day Parade on May 31, 2010. After her brother was declared a POW/MIA in 1971, Cynthia Oakes became the Greater New Haven Coordinator for Voices in Vital America. Over 13,000 POW/MIA bracelets were distributed with the help of the Hamden Junior Women's Club. Many Americans still wear the engraved silver bracelets. On Sunday, January 28, 1973, with the help of Mayor William Adams and the Citizens of Hamden, Freedom Park was dedicated on the corner of Dixwell and Whitney Avenues, the first park in the State of Connecticut dedicated to the American servicemen who are POW/MIAs.

Abner Oakes is Chairman of the Hamden Veterans Commission, and a retired Naval Officer with 32 years of service to his Country. He flew as a Navigator and was an Air Intelligence Officer. Mr. Oakes is a member of American Legion Post #88, an honorary member of JWV Post #204, former President of the National Neptune Association, and a member of the Naval Air Museum. He served as Chairman of the Naval Academy's Blue and Gold Program for the State of Connecticut for 20 years. Mr. Oakes, with the participation of the Veterans Commission and Middle School teacher Dan Levy, is responsible for Hamden Veterans Awareness Day, which takes place at Quinnipiac University on the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend.

March 4, 2009:   Fran and I are now in our 18th year here at Beach Island Resort. What a special place !!! Why??? The people of course. Over the years you learn to love and appreciate them more. The first time you enter the courtyard here at Beach Island, the Old Florida view and the Old Florida Flowers, the Old Florida view looking across the bridge over the pond and through swimming pool that sets over the beach, you see the ocean ever moving in waves toward you. If you stay a few days you start to realize Beach Island has something more precious and more desirable for your vacation. The people!!! The people that spend their vacations here, that need only Old Florida to make them happy. I have mentioned some of our Beach Island Family's in the past. The Webb's from England, The Becks and their grandson Curtis Painter quarterbacking at Purdue the last two years. I don't think I have done Aldo Icardi or David Newcomb or Don Mahoney yet. There are so many. Today I want to mention a couple that that has been at Beach Island escaping the New England cold for about 5 weeks every year since about 2001. Abner whom everybody likes and Cindy Oakes whom everybody loves. All Fran and I knew was they treated us so special, they were so sweet and made us feel so good about the job we do. This year we had two condos rented to friends of theirs. We learned that they were here for a reunion of the 1963-1964 Dartmouth Hockey Team, Ivy League Champions and Abner Oakes was their coach. Both of the husbands had played hockey at Dartmouth College and Mr. Oakes was their coach. What??? What else did we not know of this humble couple???  I learned Abner Oakes played hockey for Dartmouth College from 1952-1956. That he was captain of the 1956 team. Mr. Oakes or is it Coach Oakes, coached Dartmouth College from 1960-1970. As if that was not enough to excite, I also learned that Mr. Oakes grandfather Charles Oakes scored the first Touchdown EVER for the Dartmouth Football Team in 1881. The two guests here were John Carpenter captain of the 1963-1964 Dartmouth Hockey team with his wife Nan and Jim Cooper captain of the 1965 Dartmouth Hockey team with his wife Barbara.

The couple on left John & Nan Carpenter. The couple in the center Coach Abner & Cindy Oakes. The Couple on the right Dr. Jim & Barbara Cooper.

March 9, 2009

Just got an email from one of our Timeshare Owners. In this time of negative created by the current economy, it sure warmed Fran and my hearts. They own the two weeks just past and usually rent 2 weeks in the fall. I know we have many of our long time owners who feel as they do and are very kind to the staff here at BIR, but this week we really needed this.

Well another two weeks gone like the sand on Cocoa beach!!!  And right on cue it's snowing here today.  Oh how fast that suntan fades.  We had another great stay at our other home BIR.  The new rope brings back some of the old charm.  Someone in the hot tub said they had stayed down the beach at "a larger much classier place" ...they can have it.  Give me the people of BIR and its smallness and it's a win every time.  Ron did a great job on the path and when grass fills the bare spots that area will sparkle.  Special thanks to you and Fran for keeping things on track.  Hope your appt. goes well...see you in Nov.

Fran & I thank you Mr. & Mrs. Elliott. The appointment should go well. My ankle is healing fine.

OLD NEWS IS STILL GOOD NEWS

But Only The Best Old News.

NEWS SOME OF OUR INTERESTING EVENTS AT BEACH ISLAND RESORT THIS YEAR

July 29, 2005: Just what we needed a long hot summer Everyone is getting such a nice tan. The launch of the shuttle Discovery on July 26, 2005, was a special treat. Everyone this week has been excited over a Bald Eagle hanging out around the resort. The Ocean and pool are a bit warm 82º + but still being enjoyed. It seems like surfing gets more popular everyday. It is really fun seeing the young kids that are learning. They can talk a mile a minute explaining how they did.

Speaking of the young ones. One of the great benefits of being here at Beach Island Resort is the return of the same families each year, as I stated last month. This year while the Icardi's were here Judy told me their daughter Crystal was entered into the " National American Miss" 2005 Miss Florida Pre Teen.

June 10, 2005: One of the wonderful parts of my life is the return each year of the regulars. I was talking with Mr. Beck who has been coming to Beach Island since about 1981 <I think> long before my arrival in 1992. He was saying they would not be able to make it this year. His grandson is a quarterback on a major college football team and The Beck's plan on going to all of his grandsons games. Anyway!!!!! While talking with Mr. Beck he told me a story of their 50th wedding anniversary that made my eyes water and my heart swell. It was so Beach Island that I ask if he would put it to script and mail me a copy to post here. He obliged.

On the bright side. One of the most pleasant benefits of my job is meeting people. It is fun when people come in from other countries. From the west side to the east side of Canada. From England, Germany, Denmark & Sweden just to mention a few. It is really exciting when we get to host someone from a country you have not had before. Like 2 years ago we had guests from Japan for the first time in my 13 years here. Well the week before Hurricane Frances we had a guest, Anneli Lill, from ESTONIA. That was not only a first but I still haven't looked up exactly where it is. I will do that soon though.  Come back again Anneli and bring some of your countrymen back. Found it www.estonica.org/
